Alaska

Joseph, Oregon

Recommended by Mark Evanoff :

Joseph is a delightful flying destination. The State owned strip has fuel and is located less than a mile from town. Joseph and nearby Wallowa Lake, are nestled at the base of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Wallowa Whitman National Forest. A shuttle runs all summer long between the town and the State Park 7 miles or so away and there are several markets (Safeway!) for buying provisions.

My program has been to fly in with my bike and a backpack loaded with camping goods, grab the shuttle in town, and set up camp at the hike/bike camping area (hot showers!) at the park. There are restaurants within walking distance as well as the awesome Wallowa Lake Tramway (see link). The nearby Eagle Cap wilderness has trails leading to alpine lakes where trout can be readily caught. For those not inclined towards hiking, there's a pack station with horseback day rides up into the hills. There's also a marina at the State Park that rents canoes, and small motor boats for touring the lake! Needless to say, I love this area.
